Note: Zakat is only due on wealth held for a full lunar year (Hawl).

Zakat on cryptocurrency works the same way it does on cash and gold — but the volatility of crypto markets makes the timing and valuation genuinely tricky. This calculator applies the standard 2.5% rate to your holdings and checks whether you've crossed the Nisab threshold, so you can fulfil this obligation with confidence instead of guesswork.

How Zakat on crypto is calculated

Zakat is due on wealth you have held for one full lunar year (Hawl) and that exceeds a minimum threshold (Nisab). Most contemporary scholars treat cryptocurrency held as an investment or store of value the same as cash: it is a Zakatable asset at 2.5%. The Nisab is traditionally set at the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. This calculator uses a gold-based estimate of roughly $6,000 USD. If your total portfolio value sits below that on your Zakat due date, no Zakat is owed. You value your holdings at the market price on the day your Hawl completes — not the price you paid, and not the peak price you saw last year.

The formula

Zakat = Total Portfolio Value × 2.5% Only if: Portfolio Value ≥ Nisab (≈ $6,000) And: Wealth held for 1 full lunar year (Hawl)

The lunar year is about 354 days — 11 days shorter than the solar year. If you set your Zakat date by the Gregorian calendar, some scholars suggest using 2.577% instead of 2.5% to compensate.

Practical tips

  • 1Pick one fixed date each lunar year — many people use Ramadan — and value everything on that day. Consistency matters more than picking the 'perfect' date.
  • 2Include every wallet: exchange balances, cold storage, staked coins, and tokens sitting in DeFi protocols. Coins you cannot access at all (locked or lost) are generally excluded.
  • 3Coins bought purely for short-term trading are treated as trade goods, and the same 2.5% applies to their market value.
  • 4If your holdings dipped below Nisab during the year but were above it on both the start and end dates, most scholars still consider Zakat due.
  • 5Keep a simple record of your Zakat date and calculation each year. It removes the annual uncertainty entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Is cryptocurrency actually subject to Zakat?

The majority of contemporary scholars say yes. If you hold crypto as a store of value or investment, it functions like cash and is treated the same way — Zakatable at 2.5% once it exceeds Nisab and has been held for a lunar year. Scholarly opinion is not unanimous, so consult a scholar you trust if you have doubts.

Do I pay Zakat on my profit or on the total value?

On the total value, not just the profit. Unlike capital gains tax, Zakat applies to the whole Zakatable asset. If you invested $10,000 and it is now worth $40,000, Zakat is calculated on the $40,000.

What if my coins are staked or locked in DeFi?

If you still own them and will regain access, they are generally Zakatable at their market value. Staking rewards you have received are part of your holdings. Coins that are permanently inaccessible — a lost seed phrase, for example — are usually excluded because you have no real ownership benefit.

Which price do I use when crypto moves so much?

The market price on the day your Hawl completes. Not your entry price, not the yearly high, not an average. Pick your date, check the value on that date, calculate. That single snapshot is what counts.

Is the Nisab in this calculator exact?

No — it is an estimate. Nisab is tied to the live price of 85 grams of gold, which moves daily. The $6,000 figure used here is a reasonable approximation, but if your portfolio sits near the threshold, check the current gold price and calculate the exact Nisab for your date.
